Chess star's father cleared of rape

The father of a teenage chess prodigy who fell to her death from a hotel window has been cleared of repeatedly raping her when she was still a child.
Ian Gilbert denied his daughter Jessica's claims that he forced her to have sex with him in her bedroom at the family home in Woldingham, Surrey, when she was just nine years old. She told police that he raped her repeatedly until she was 13 years old.
Jessica died this year, aged 19, when she fell from an eighth-floor hotel room in Pardubice, 65 miles east of Prague, in the Czech Republic where she had been taking part in an international chess tournament.
A jury took 15 hours to find the 49-year-old not guilty of all charges of rape of Jessica while she was under 16. They also cleared him of two counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault on other people.
Gilbert remained impassive as the verdict was read out. His new wife Sally was in court to hear her husband cleared. The four-man, eight-woman jury listened to more than a month of evidence at Guildford Crown Court, in Surrey.
They heard that Jessica, a very talented chess player who represented Britain in the game, was a troubled, anxious child. Family members, including her grandfather Alan, said that they found the exceptionally clever youngster "detached".
But after he and Jessica had a row about him using her laptop, Mr Gilbert's relationship with Jessica's mother collapsed and they divorced. It was only after her father finally moved out of the family home that Jessica told her mother that he had raped her.
Mr Gilbert denied all the charges against him and said he had no idea why his daughter would hate him enough to make false rape allegations. He said she had been playing a "game of chess" against him and carefully plotting a "battle strategy" to take revenge against him after they fell out over the laptop. He told the jury that he found the accusations "disgusting" and had never had sexual thoughts about his daughter.
On a New Year's Eve night out at the end of 2003, she went out with friends and got drunk. She climbed a wall at Croydon's clock tower and threatened to jump off before her friends dragged her down. It was then that she told them the reason she wanted to die was because her father had raped her. The following year she got very drunk and again told friends that she had been raped.
This time her friends took her home and told her mother what Jessica had said. She then confronted her daughter, who said it was true. The following day she took an overdose of paracetamol but later recovered. She fell to her death in July this year, shortly before her father's trial was originally due to start, having been postponed from an original January start date.

Women can't play chess

I found this quote on Shut Up Sit Down (I shall add it to my blogroll forthwith!) were Anji has compiled a list of wonderful women's quotations.

It reminded me of every Tuesday evening, when I play chess with various people at a local pub. I am nearly always the only woman playing. Every time I play a newcomer, or when men (they are usually men) are watching my games, I invariably feel an intense pressure not to lose and it's not because I am a bad loser. Well, actually, I can be a bad loser but that's not the point I'm raising.

The pressure I feel is that if I lose, my opponent or the people watching won't think, "she can't play chess", but "women can't play chess". It's a very uncomfortable pressure and it annoys me that men don't have to experience it.

Perhaps the men have a certain pressure when they play me, like, "I can't be beaten by a girl", but, ya know, diddums.

Last Tuesday a guy I beat said it was like being hit over the head with a feather duster. I don't even know what that's supposed to mean.

Language and the clitoris

I was having a conversation last night about the plural of "clitoris". I know what the plural of "penis" is - penises.

Is it "clitorises"?

I then began thinking of all the names there are for the penis: cock, dick, knob, willy, rod, bratwurst... :)

What are the alternative names for the clitoris? Are clitorises (?) mentioned in literature and porn? According to etymology online a male anatomist claimed to have discovered the clitoris in the 16th century and called it "the love or sweetness of venus" (bit long-winded). Women knew about it before of course, but what did they call it? Does anybody know?

Language as it exists now developed under patriarchy, and as such words for the clitoris seem to have assumed little importance. There is not even a word for the act of the clitoris being stimulated manually by one's partner. "She/he masturbated me" doesn't seem quite right when you've got "a hand-job" for the almighty penis. (Blow-job. Hand-job. "Jobs". Did these terms originate in prostitution?)

There are plenty of words for the vagina as we all know, sadly. Things like "slit" and "gash" come to mind as some of the worst offenders. Words for the vagina are used with abundance in porn and literature but what of the clitoris? I've heard "button" (bit functional) and "jewel" (bit sentimental). Any more?

The clitoris is of little importance, and as such has few alternative names because, unlike the vagina, men have no use for it.

So, what do you call yours? I'm still trying to think of a nice name for my vagina.
