I love all those columbo repeats - there is something innocent about them that harks back to the days before misogyny took hold, and not everything was tinged with porn - I love him- he uses the same mannerisms and the same techniques to lure in the suspect every time, they start out being cooperative and friendly, he let's them think he's a doofus and will never ever solve the case, then after he pesters them with his little psychological-warfare clues that he drops to the suspect, the irritation startst to become apparent and he always gets them in the end - same techniques every time, but I never tire of watching it lol.
quincy? nah - in the opening sequence (which used to gall me everytime) there was the young nymphette in bikini pandering to the guy old enough to be her dad - but having said that, I did used to watch it, however, columbo was much less sexy, just cute without the porn.
ps - quincy wasn't even sexy, never mind cute so even more reason to question the bikini slave girl - oh.... silly me, how could I forget the T&C's of living in this patriarchally ruled world of ours - the ugly guys do'nt have to try hard, the ugly girls/women do.
The love I feel for Columbo has nothing to do with feminism I'm afraid. The series is rife with misogyny in fact.
The sexism is reflective of the times, just as the sexism in all TV programmes is reflective of the times.
But I like Columbo despite it all and for a lot of the reasons anon1 said. I just do. Even feminists need to enjoy things sometimes. Unfortunately a TV series with radical feminist ideals has yet to air. (That thing with Helen Mirren doesn't count. Definitely not.)
Columbo and Quincy would be pals. And how dare you "pah" him!!! Yes, rife with misogyny, the woman in the opening sequences is just so much dead meat until the camera pulls back and she moves...she's alive!! Quincy has a tryst! I always felt safe watching Columbo and Quincy when I was little. It was all so predictable and cosy, no graphic violence, the subtle woman-hating went unnoticed by a younger me. I suppose my continued enjoyment is predicated on that sense-memory store. It is a chance to revisit my less-comlicated self.
Revisiting your less-complicated self - that's probably another reason for me too. As for Quincy and Columbo being friends...well, possibly, but Columbo is much cleverer.

Can we start a blogwar over whether or not he's cute?
Well Phemi, if there was ever a case for a blogwar...this is it!
Pippa!
Quincy? Quincy? You are derailing the comment thread, which is no mean feat considering you are the first commenter.

And.... Columbo is terribly cute.
